How Sedation Dentistry Works
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help reduce stress, fear, or discomfort during dental care. Often called “conscious sedation” or “twilight sleep,” it allows patients to remain awake and responsive while feeling deeply relaxed and less aware of pain. In most cases, patients remember very little of the procedure afterward, making dental visits more comfortable and manageable.
At Center for Advanced Dentistry in Loveland, CO, sedation may be recommended for patients with dental anxiety or phobia, fear of needles, a strong gag reflex, highly sensitive teeth, claustrophobia, or difficulty sitting still for treatment. It can also benefit patients with physical, behavioral, or cognitive challenges, or those undergoing longer procedures such as periodontal surgery or dental implant placement.
For our dental implant procedures, we typically use general anesthesia delivered via IV to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pain-free experience.

Types of Sedation for Dental Implants
Dental implant procedures use different levels of sedation, tailored to each patient’s needs and the length of the treatment. Sedation can range from minimal (you remain awake but relaxed) to moderate (you may slur words or forget parts of the procedure), to deep sedation (on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened), and finally general anesthesia (completely asleep).
Common types of dental sedation include:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Inhaled through a mask, it helps you relax within minutes. Effects wear off quickly, allowing most patients to drive themselves home.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Taken as a pill (or liquid for children) about an hour before treatment, this makes you very relaxed and drowsy—you may even nap during the procedure.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
Delivered through a vein in your arm, IV sedation provides the deepest level of conscious sedation. It is ideal for patients with higher anxiety or for longer procedures, and most people remember little to nothing afterward.
At Center for Advanced Dentistry in Loveland, CO, our in-house anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia via IV sedation for dental implant procedures. You will be fully asleep, completely unaware of the procedure, and free from pain. Your vital signs are continuously monitored by a trained professional throughout the surgery. Local anesthesia may also be used to ensure comfort during the procedure.
After your procedure, you will gradually wake in a recovery area with little to no memory of the surgery. Because anesthesia can cause drowsiness for up to 24 hours, patients must arrange for a companion to drive them home and assist until fully recovered.
How to Prepare for General Anesthesia
For your safety, it’s important to carefully follow all pre-procedure instructions provided by our team. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking the night before or the morning of your surgery, except for small sips of water with certain medications. Please inform our office if you develop a cold or any illness in the week leading up to your appointment. Avoid driving or operating machinery until the day after your procedure to ensure full recovery.
How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

Pain and Comfort During Dental Implant Surgery
You will be fully asleep and comfortable under general anesthesia during the procedure. Some mild discomfort is normal during the first week after surgery, but most patients find that over-the-counter pain medication is sufficient to manage it.

Procedure Day
Your procedure begins with anesthesia to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pain-free experience. Damaged teeth and tissue are removed, and implants are placed with surgical precision. Advanced 3D scanning and photogrammetry are then used to create the most accurate fit for your custom prosthetic.
While you rest and recover, our on-site lab 3D prints your prosthesis. By the same day or the next, you’ll receive your full-arch implant restoration, leaving you with a renewed, functional smile.

Recovery & Aftercare
Mild discomfort and some pain are common during the first week after surgery. To support healing, we recommend eating soft foods, getting plenty of rest, and maintaining good oral hygiene. Follow-up visits are scheduled at one week, one month, and three months to monitor your progress and ensure proper recovery.5.
Final Permanent Teeth
Approximately three months after your procedure—once your implants have fully fused with the bone and your healing is complete—we’ll take updated records and create a prototype try-in of your new teeth. After you approve the prototype, we will finalize and fabricate your permanent teeth, which are typically placed one to two weeks later, completing your smile transformation.6.
